Talking to most girls over 50 you will rapidly locate that menopause and weight gain are linked in their experience. It is very common to put on fat at this time and although some of this may possibly be due to lifestyle changes, that will not explain why suddenly we develop a tendency to put on fat at various parts with the body, specifically the abdomen, whilst any weight gained when we were younger tended to be centered about the hips.

The truth is that hormonal alterations do have a part to play in this, although the procedure is not totally understood. At menopause a woman stops ovulating, her monthly menstruation periods end, and her system produces much lower amounts in the female hormone estrogen which is responsible for the ovulation procedure. Low estrogen has been shown to cause weight gain in animals and it almost certainly is the reason why our bodies change shape. Although girls of childbearing age shop excess fat from the lower entire body, after the menopause they store it about the abdomen instead, like males. This leads to a greater risk of heart illness.

At the same time, both men and women tend to uncover muscle turning to fat as they grow older, and the metabolism slows down. This means that if you don’t adjust your eating habits you will probably uncover that your pounds increases. An individual of 60 just won’t need as several calories as a person of 40.

Hormone therapy with estrogen is sometimes prescribed to control menopausal symptoms. Quite a few women will be surprised to hear that studies have shown that hormone treatment doesn’t bring about extra weight. Some ladies encounter bloating and water retention inside the early stages of hormone remedy but this is generally temporary and they have not gained any fat. Hormone treatment can decrease the probability of heart disease by preventing the modifications in storage of physique excess fat all around the abdomen and lowering cholesterol. However, hormone treatment has been linked to an increased chance of breast cancer in some studies.

Should you uncover that you are gaining pounds around the menopause, you will find many things you’ll be able to do.

- Eat a healthy, low excess fat diet with plenty of fiber, avoiding sugar.

- Take regular exercise. As people get older their physical activity levels naturally drop. Work usually becomes much less physically demanding, you can find no kids to run all-around immediately after, we take less active holidays and do things more slowly. 30 minutes of moderate physical activity each and every day will support to balance out the effect of this.

- Maintain your muscle strength and mass. Use weights for arm muscles and walking or cycling for legs.

- Accept the adjustments to the shape of your entire body. If you ever aren’t overweight, but simply have a thicker waist and slimmer legs, which is fine.

Consult with your doctor or go to physicians weight loss clinic before starting any exercise program if you’ve any medical conditions or your fitness levels are low. Your doctor can also help with symptoms in the menopause and weight loss diet.

For many businesses, 2009 has been a painful year. Not so for BodyLogicMD. The nation’s largest and fastest growing network of expert physicians specializing exclusively in medically supervised bioidentical hormones has grown the number of physicians in its network since November 2008 – from 21 to 36 physicians – and is in progress to add more physician-owned centers, including one in Puerto Rico, by the end of this year.

In the past year, BodyLogicMD has opened 13 new bioidentical hormone specialty practices around the country, currently spanning coverage in 36 cities and 18 states.

“2009 has been a year of unprecedented growth for BodyLogicMD,” said Patrick Savage, founder and president of BodyLogicMD, Inc. “We’re adding an average of 1,000 new patients each month and are opening new offices and adding doctors to existing locations as quickly as possible to meet the tremendous demand. It’s very exciting to be a part of the explosive growth in this area of preventive medicine.”

Savage attributes the intense demand for BodyLogicMD’s doctors to Americans’ increasing willingness to seek out physicians who focus on addressing the root causes of their medical conditions to help them regain optimal health through a customized regimen of diet, nutritional supplements, and hormone therapy. BodyLogicMD physicians take detailed medical histories of each patient during the initial hour-long consultation, and review the results of comprehensive lab tests and learn as much about the patient’s medical and lifestyle profile to determine the best course of treatment.

BodyLogicMD opened its first office in 2004 and followed with four more locations in 2005. Expansion continued at a steady pace from 2006 to 2008. In January 2009, Oprah Winfrey’s broadcast of three shows on the subject of bioidentical hormones struck a chord with millions of women suffering from symptoms related to peri-menopause, menopause, and other conditions related to hormone imbalances. Oprah.com featured BodyLogicMD.com as the only expert resource for physicians practicing bioidentical hormone replacement therapy – and within one month the company received over 10,000 inquiries from prospective patients seeking treatment.

Men are increasingly seeking treatment for symptoms related to andropause, or male menopause, and now constitute approximately 30% of BodyLogicMD’s patients nationwide. Other factors motivating patients to seek treatment include night sweats in men, extreme stress, libido issues, depression, memory loss, weight gain, lack of energy, and hair loss.

About BodyLogicMD

Founded in 2003, BodyLogicMD physician-owned practices make up the nation’s largest and fastest growing network of the most highly trained physicians specializing in natural bioidentical hormone replacement therapy. Integrated with fitness and nutrition programs, BodyLogicMD’s medically supervised programs are for men and women suffering from hormonal imbalance, menopause, and andropause. BodyLogicMD is currently featured as an expert resource on Oprah.com; Suzanne Somers’ latest books “Knockout” and “Breakthrough” lists BodyLogicMD as an expert source, and her book, “Ageless, The Naked Truth About Bioidentical Hormones” dedicates an entire chapter to BodyLogicMD, and Business Week March, 2006 cover story features the BodyLogicMD business story.

Clinicians are accustomed to treating patients who have medical illnesses; however, managing the symptoms associated with menopause—a natural, biologic process—is quite different. Hormone therapy (HT) using estrogen either with or without progesterone remains the most effective, and most studied, treatment.1 But many patients and clinicians have reservations about using HT because of the controversy surrounding it. All clinicians, regardless of their specialty, may encounter patients who have questions about the use of hormones. In family medicine practices, women may inquire about hot flashes and night sweats ; in orthopedics practices, the treatment and prevention of osteoporosis; and, in gynecology practices, dyspareunia and vaginal atrophy. Clinicians should be able to respond with accurate, upto- date information on the recommendations for HT as well as its known risks and benefits.

The North American Menopause Society (NAMS) estimates that 6,000 women daily and more than 2 million women each year enter menopause.2 Menopause occurs in three stages: perimenopause, menopause, and post menopause. Perimenopause is when estrogen levels begin sporadically increasing and decreasing, leading to irregular menstruation and adverse symptoms, such as hot flashes. Perimenopause begins the transition to menopause and can last for 5 years or longer. Menopause is defined as the final cessation of menstrual periods and is confirmed after 12 consecutive months of amenorrhea. A woman is then considered to be postmenopausal. At this time, her ovaries produce very little estrogen and no progesterone, and ovulation has ceased. Typically, a woman experiences natural menopause between the ages of 45 and 54 years.

For clarification, this article uses the NAMS terminology: ET refers to unopposed estrogen therapy; EPT refers to combination estrogen and progestogen therapy; and the term progestogen refers to both progesterone and progestins. NAMS describes progesterone as being identical to the hormone produced by the ovaries, whereas progestins are synthesized compounds that act like progesterone. HT refers collectively to both ET and EPT.3
